Inspection teams should always contain at least the producer and two other engineers. If the moderator will not be a reviewer, a minimum-sized inspection team would require four engineers: the producer, two reviewers, and the moderator.
Hold tine inspection Briefing
In the inspection briefing, the moderator describes the inspection process. The objective here is to familiarize the inspection team with the key aspects of the inspection process. Following this discussion, the producer describes the product and answers the team's questions.
At this point, the reviewers should decide on the viewpoints that each one will take during the inspection. They can also allocate product areas and inspection techniques among the team members. For example, in design inspections at least one engineer should thoroughly analyze every logical element in the product. In the inspection preparation reviews, the engineers should do more than look at the design. Unless engineers use a technique such as a trace table or a state machine analysis, they are unlikely to find the sophisticated design problems. Note, however, that if the engineers decide to specialize in product areas, the capture-recapture method will not work for estimating the remaining defects. Finally, the moderator sets a date for the inspection meeting. This should be a date when everyone will be available and by which all the team members agree to be fully prepared
Review the Product
The inspection review phase is the most important part of an inspection. At this time, each engineer carefully reviews the product to find any problems or areas of confusion. It is important that they use sound review methods and that they take the time to do a thorough job. They also need to record the time that they spend and mark every defect on the product materials. The engineers should not record the defects they find on the LOGD form at this time. The reason is that there would then be multiple reports for the defects that were found by several engineers. Wait and enter the major defect data on the INS and LOGD forms during the inspection meeting.
Open the Inspection Meeting
The first step in the inspection meeting is for the moderator to obtain the preparation data from each engineer. If anyone is not adequately prepared, the moderator defers the meeting until a date when everyone promises to be prepared. Conducting an inspection meeting with unprepared is a waste of time and will not be effective. If the meeting had to be deferred, the moderator should mention this fact the team’s weekly status report and say why.
