History
Founded in 1960 as joint venture between Thailand's domestic carrier, Thai Airways Company (TAC) and Scandinavian Airline Systems (SAS)
SAS provided not only capital but operations, managerial and marketing expertise, with training assistance aimed at building a fully independent national airline in the shortest possible time
Commenced flights from Bangkok to 9 overseas destinations all within the Asian region in 1960
Intercontinental services to Australia were launched in 1971, followed by flights to Europe in 1972 and North America in 1980
After 17 year partnership with SAS, the Thai Government bought out SAS on April 1st 1977, Thai Airways merged with Thai Airways Company (TAC) in April 1988 forming the new Thai Airways International, Thailand's only national carrier servicing domestic and international destinations
Currently serves more than 70 destinations
