Both the preheaters and paver-mounted heaters are placed about
2–3 in. (51–76 mm) above the pavement surface and straddle the joint. The infrared heaters usually
target a final surface temperature of 340°F (171°C) behind the paver-mounted heater. The target surface
temperature can be achieved by changing the number of preheaters, the distance between the
preheaters and paver, and the height of the heaters above the pavement surface. All these variables
need to be adjusted, taking into account prevailing ambient conditions such as air temperature and
wind velocity
