Although still recognizably Hindu, the style of the imagery signals the resurgence of local animist traditions, as opposed to the classical model of Hindu tradition.
This temple was thus more explicitly dedicated to the worship of ancestor spirits and the local spirit of the mountain.
It also seems to have been connected to a fertility cult, based on the sexual content of much of the imagery. So the rituals involved were of a more localized nature, rather than involving Hinduism in its more universally recognized scriptural form.
