Frank Woolworth worked as a shop assistant in a general store. He was young, shy, and stumbling, so his boss found such a worker useless and decided to fire him. But first he gave Frank the last chance saying if he made daily profit for one shift, he would stay employed. In a desperate attempt Frank invented a revolutionary idea of setting a fixed price for his goods. The thing is that over a century ago there were no price tags: sellers weighed a customer’s ability to pay using their sixth sense and named a price. Woolworth found his own solution which changed his life. He stuck a piece of paper with the lowest price on it on every item and set a sign saying “Sale for 5 cents” on the shelf with unsaleable stock. Frank made 6 daily returns of the shop, quit this job, and opened his own store.
