Stray Cats
View passage image
A large number of stray cats live in the Booker family barn. The Booker family is trying to decide if the cats should be allowed to stay there or not. Three members of the family give their opinions.
Maggie:
The cats play a crucial role in keeping the barn free from pests. They eat bugs, moles, mice, hamsters, and basically any other small rodents they can get their paws on. They keep possums and raccoons out of the barn, and this helps keep the chickens safe. Without the cats, pests would invade the barn.
Jeremy:
The cats fight with each other. They scratch the walls of the barn. They shred the hay and leave it in little piles on the floor. They climb in the rafters and knock down the lights. They attack the chickens and even the cows. And that's not all. They also scatter the pig food throughout the barn, which makes an awful smell.
Ellen:
The cats dig deep holes in the floor of the barn. This can be very hazardous. Just last week, I stepped into one of these holes while bailing hay. I twisted my ankle. It hurt pretty badly. The cats also shed fur in the barn. These little clumps of fur blow around by the wind, eventually landing in some difficult-to-reach places. But perhaps the worst thing the cats do is pee on the walls. And let me tell you, that cat pee reeks. It produces a smell so terrible that on windy days it reaches all the way up to the house.
