What is being suggested here is that knowledge is always
personal, is always knowledge from a particular point of view
which is determined and shaped by the past experience of the
knower. In order to "place" this knowledge in its proper social
context, it is therefore important to also place the experience of
the knower within a social framework which will help to make
sense of the perspective from which it is viewed. With respect to
education, for instance, it is important to realise, that women and
people of colour, who have often been the objects of particular
forms of oppression will often find it difficult to express their view
of the world in the presence of the oppressor, without important
safeguards for their dignity and sense of safety.
