Live height (dead tops were not measured), basal diameter and survival
were recorded monthly for all trees during the first four months and thereafter
at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 years. Between eight and nine months of age, five
plants each of a border row (Sadore, Niger) and a southern origin
(Messina, RSA) occurring side by side in the experiment were excavated to
a depth of 4 m to compare root development. Roots greater than 2 mm in
diameter were traced and measured. Above- and below-ground biomass
and distribution of roots down the soil profile were recorded.
