The aim of this study is to prepare PMMA/SPIONs nanoparticles grafted with PEG bis(amine) as an effective adsorbent to remove heavy metal pollutants from waste water. This work focuses on four types of metal salt ions (lead, mercury, copper and cobalt),which were removed from aqueous solutions by using the surfacemodified hybrid nanoparticles and applying an external magnetic field. The surface morphology and the functional groups of PEG bis(amine)-grafted PMMA/SPIONs nanoparticles were characterized by using the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The magnetic properties were investigated by the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The metal ion concentrations in the solutions before and after removal by the magnetic nanoparticles were determined by inductivity coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES).
