Edward T hall 's theory of Low-context and High-context culture helps us better understand the powerful effect of culture on communication.
Ways of communication is a result of the culture of a certain region. Thus, for understanding these two types of culture we must first understand the two modes of communications: HC (High context) communication and LC ( Low context ) communication.
LC communication
The message is explicit and blunt, thus task-centered. The duration of communication is short and the knowledge is public, external and accessible.
HC communication
The message is implicit and indirect, thus people expect you to understand more than what is said. Deciphering of the message is expected by the listener and huge responsibility of understanding lies on him.
So, the culture that uses HC communication is said to be High context culture and similarly Low context culture uses LC communication.
