Another problem with segmentation in the clinical setting is that segmentation by broad treatment categories (e.g. mental health) is too crude a measure to prevent some serious drug interaction. Thus, before prescribing medication for a “non-segmental” condition (e.g. analgesics for pain caused by trauma), it may be essential to essential to know whether a patient is also taking medications for a segmented condition (e.g. antipsychotics for mental illness).
