Personal Growth Initiative is a potentially important construct to counseling because it reflects one of the basic tenets of the field: teaching clients the skills needed to have a productive and fulfilling life (Gelso & Fretz, 1992). The Personal Growth Initiative Scale might be useful in outcome research and program evaluation as a measure of whether individuals have learned a growth oriented way of approaching new tasks and challenges in their lives. It also might be useful in therapy because it focuses both the client and the counselor on personal growth initiative, addressing assets already present within the client that can be appreciated or assets that can be enhanced by the counseling process. Future research should test these possible uses of PGI and the PGIS.
