Analyzing the trajectory of the three pioneer research groups, the first two are still currently doing research in industrial safety. The EPSP-IQS group has specialized in the study of runaway reactions, developing new tools and methodologies to assess hazards in highly reactive systems; whereas CERTEC has a more diversified scope, studying the different types of fires and their modeling (it should be emphasized here the work done to characterize hydrocarbon pool fires and jet fires) and also working in the dispersion of toxic substances and the effect of confinement as a protective measure, the BLEVE phenomenon (contributing with new methods to estimate overpressure), the historical analysis of accidents or the
investigation of real accidents.
