4.3. Harmonic analysis
Constituents within the diurnal, semidiurnal and quarter diurnal tidal species are found to show similar developments in amplitudes and phases, which is why only the dominant tidal constituents within a species are presented. These are the O1, M2 and M4 tidal constituents, representing the diurnal, semidiurnal and quarterdiurnal tidal species, respectively. The tidal phases obtained from the harmonic analysis are to a small degree influenced by differences inwater level recording frequency. For the period 1940–1970, the exact moment a certain water level occurs does not correspond to the moment given in the source dataset. It appears that by shifting the recording times 2 h forward, the tidal phase of the period 1940–1970 (measurement frequency every 3 h) smoothly connects to the phase of the period 1970–1987 (measurement frequency every hour). Similarly, by shifting the recording time of the period 1970–1987 forward by 50 min, the phases corresponds with that of 1987–2012 (measurement frequency every 10 min). Within a period of constant sampling frequency, the phase information can be qualitatively interpreted, which also holds for the phase difference between The O1 water level amplitude varies from approximately 11 cm for the seaward stations to about 2 cm inland (Fig. 9), with increasing phases in upstream direction. In 1970, the amplitude drops while the phase abruptly increases at the southern and central stations. For the seaward stations, both the amplitude and the phase of O1 display a more variable pattern than for stations that are located further upstream. TheM2 amplitudes in the south and the centre feature a sudden decrease in 1970, while phases increase (Fig. 10). Unlike O1, before 1970 the amplitude ofM2was larger in the south than in the north, with a distinct increase in the period 1960–1970. After 1970, the phase of the M2 constituent becomes much more variable for southern stations, while the northern stations display a relatively stable phase. All northern and central stations except Hoek van Holland display a small increase in tidal amplitude and a small decrease in phase (in the figure, only six out of thirteen water level measurement stations are shown). The M4 amplitude varies from 17 cm at the seaward boundary of Hoek van Holland to below 5 cm at the stations along the Haringvliet and Hollandsch Diep while phases show a large spread. As with O1 andM2, amplitudes suddenly decrease in 1970 for southern stations, while phases tend to increase. In correspondence to theM2 amplitude behaviour, a sudden amplitude increase is seen in 1997 for most northern and all central stations, and a small decrease in phase. Additional to that, all northern stations and central stations, except for Hoek van Holland and Dordrecht , show a decrease in M4 amplitude in 1981 (as with the other tidal constituents, only six out of thirteen water level measurement stations are shown). The large changes inM4 amplitudes can be explained by the nonlinear generation ofM4 byM2. A change inM2 amplitude results in an amplified change in M4 amplitude, due to the nonlinear generation of M4. The combined effect of M2 and M4 amplitude changes affect asymmetry of the tide. When the phase difference 2φM2 − φM4 is taken as a measure of deformation of the tide, parameterizing tidal asymmetry, the only substantial change is seen in 1970, at the moment of closure of the Haringvliet and Hollandsch Diep estuaries . Besides this shift, which is significantly larger than may be attributed to the effect of the change in sampling frequency, the phase difference parameterizing tidal asymmetry remains relatively constant. Amplitudes of the fortnightly tide MSf reach further upstream than the semidiurnal and diurnal tides, which can be explained from the associated river flow-tide
