A new orientee, a preceptor, two othernurses from the nursery, even a respiratory
therapist got involved. We actually had a PCA
say, dWell, you could do this and this.T One of the
nurses said it would be a good idea [typically] but
this baby was postop so it wouldn’t work. It
allowed the PCA to be part of the group and
[told him] if he had ideas it would be okay to
voice them.
Other interviewees, particularly nurses, talked about
the value of getting input from other team members,
commenting that it boosted team cohesiveness and
created an environment of respect for others. Their
remarks suggest that an important attribute of nurse
professionalism is getting other team members
to participate in decision making to improve patient
care processes.
