Furthermore, it is important to highlight that the region is characterized by a significant number of protected natural areas. The regional law has established 63 protected areas which cover a total surface of 210,625 ha (7.6% of the territory). This aspect gives to the region a relevant environmental and ecological value to be protected and enhanced. The application described in the following paragraphs intends to highlight the most relevant areas from the point of view of biodiversity conservation, due to their high value of environmental natural quality, in order to identify the areas to preserve and consequently enhance the potential ecological corridors linking these protected areas (Ferretti and Pomarico, 2012b).
