These elements of Confucian dynamism had a strong influence on Korean modernism. For example, even the secondary groups in Korean society (civil society), such as one’s company or social group, have family-type structures. This is one facet of Korean-style collectivism, which is much more ingrained in society than individualism. The family-style business methods of most Korean companies that have created the Miracle on the Han River were successful through group integration and individual sacrifice, despite Korea’s lack of natural resources and unstable political environment. The five-year plan of economic development Korea enacted under president Park Jeong-hee was realized so quickly that it surprised the world by its effectiveness, despite the existence of unequal relationships between management and laborers. Indeed, a deep interest in the patience, simple lifestyle, frugality, learning strategies and education became the groundwork for Korean modernism.
