Knowledge of the basic aspects of trials was unaffected by
the patients' age or years of education. However, knowledge
was lower among patients participating in trials where treatment
initiation was urgent (Table 1). Except for the possibility
of receiving a placebo, knowledge was slightly higher among
patients who deferred consent until a subsequent visit. Awareness
of the characteristics of the trial was also higher among
patients who had read the information form, except for the
possibility of adverse effects.
