The MAXMINCON principle is a process in which the researcher attempts to maximize the variance of the variables involved in the study, minimize the error variance of random variables, and control the variance of extraneous variables (Heppner, Wampold & Kivlighan, 2008). Controlling the variance observed in the dependent variable is the technical function of research design. One would preferably want to eliminate possible confounding variables, and also develop a sensitive test of the experimental hypothesis (MAXMINCON Principle, n d.).
