through some interviews at times surfaced with clarity, as with Pak Purwo, a
lnan in his eighties from a village outside of Yogyakarta. He had worked only
briefly and part-time as a gardener for a Dutch administrator in a sugar factory,
in addition to working on the plantation and in the factory itself. The interview
took place in the yard of his home, just several hundred yards from the
former site of the factory, burnt down during the revolution.
