Moral and Ethical Qualities of Leadership in Education
Schools play a formative role in maintaining the ethical norms of a society. Schools are also responsible for looking out for the well-being of the students. Therefore, the school administrators must fundamentally conduct themselves in a moral and ethical manner. Various personal qualities and characteristics lead to ethical administration within the school system.

1. Negotiation
o Educational leaders, such as school administrators, often have a difficult time determining what is ethical and unethical as there are various groups they must satisfy, ranging from school boards and parents to legislators. Many decisions that benefit one party can harm another party or simply take resources away from that party. Therefore, administrators must have the ability to negotiate and compromise. Administrators may feel that schools are inherently moral since they are designed to meet the educational needs of students, often seen as a noble goal. But schools can sometimes engage in unethical actions.
Understanding Subordinants
o Educational leaders must understand the views of those they lead so they can help them feel that their interests are being represented. If an administrator simply uses authority to force teachers to behave in a particular manner, the teachers will be resistant and will need more micro-managing. For example, if a school wants to incorporate technology into the classroom but teachers are resistant because they feel that they lack technological competence, the administration can help by providing the teachers with technology workshops.

Reasonable Requests
o When leaders place obligations on those they lead, the followers tend to ignore ethical and moral considerations and instead rely on policy. Teachers tend to take the easiest path to avoid conflict and free up their time, allowing them to carry out actions that are required. For example, if teachers are required to raise standardized test scores, they might not spend as much time helping students with personal issues. Leaders should place a reasonable number of expectations on the teachers so that they can devote sufficient time to the most important tasks, educating their students.
Moral Character
o An ethical leader must embody the values of the entire school and not engage in actions that he would not want those beneath him to engage in. For example, the administrator should treat all of the teachers in the school equally, modeling how instructors should treat all of their students with the same regard.
Student-oriented
o Though educational administrators must satisfy various groups, they must ultimately serve the students. Ethical administrators seek to create programs that have the greatest potential to benefit the students academically, design procedures that maximize student safety, and ensure that students have freedom of thought and expression. When communicating with the public about the school, administrators must always be truthful. Ethical administrators must also create an environment where there is no discrimination and a promotion of the values held by society.
