For many years, Mexicans in the United States have been stereotyped. Some of the most common stereotypes that come to mind consist of: laziness, being illegal immigrants, unable to speak the English language, drunks, and gang members. These misconceptions have been passed on not only by one individual to another but also across all media platforms.



Many Mexicans who come to this nation acquire jobs that many American people simply refuse to do. Should these Mexicans who work extended hours, are poorly paid, and often in unfit working conditions be considered lazy? In my opinion they are far from lazy.

These hard-working Mexicans are grateful and blessed they have a job and are able to put food on the table to feed their families.

There is some truth in the fact that some Mexicans stand on street corners, or in front of stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, and to most people they are perceived as careless, lethargic and not willing to find work, but how many of those who stereotype them know the real reasons why they are standing at those specific spots? It is to find any possible job opportunities. They do not care nor do they have the privilege of being picky on what type of jobs they must take. Many of the jobs are anything from cleaning gutters, doing yard work, doing work around the house, or even roofing. They aren’t worried about what type of work they must do their only concern is being able to support themselves and their families.

Another misconception about Mexicans is that Mexican women are all uneducated and are only good as homemakers and having many children. According to an article in ericdigests.org, many Mexican women are educated and have degrees in a range of important fields, and the number of Mexican women who strive to attend universities and continue their education has increased over time. Although it many be a slow process because of the hardships they endure these Mexican women are still fighting to make important progress.

As for the common stereotype that all Mexican women are only good as housewives, this is also false. Many Mexican women do have families because having a family is an important part of the Mexican culture, but that does not make them only housewives. These independent, strong women also attend schools and universities, have jobs, cook and clean and raise families. I ask myself, when did it become an insult to be a housewife?
