According to Janet Likens (1978), ethnocentric speech results in three types of communicative distance : indifference , avoidance , and disparagement.
1. The distance of indifference - ethnocentric people , without caring , might talk to people of other groups with superriority, for example, talking slowly , talking with exaggerated pronunciation and simplification , asking others to repeat themselves , etc.
2. The distance of avoidance - ethnocentric people might try to avoid having constant with people of other groups or try to use expressions or slang that members of other cultures or out-groups do not understand.
3. The distance of disparagement - ethnocentric people might openly express their dislike of others by calling them nanes. For example, in the U.S., the African -Americans were and are still called " nigger", the Japanese were occasionally called "nip", and the Chinese were called "chink".
