Third, this study revealed that intrinsic motivations
such as engagement in social relationships and opportunities
for socialising were seen to be important for cruise
ship employees. This is extremely important for the cruise
industry as the employees have limited opportunity for
socialisation outside occupation. Even when they are off
duty they are constantly in the presence of other staff and
customers. Finally, this study found that the employees
experienced long working hours, challenging customers
and poor living standards that affected their motivation,
but this again differed according to cruise ships, with
some companies offering their staff more provision of
time off for the employees to join excursions.
