The study combines for the first time material flow
indicators with carbon footprint to monitor the changes over
time of the Romanian solid waste management system (with
focus on municipal solid waste). The only recent study in
which information on the total carbon footprint values from
different sectors: energy, transportation, waste sector and
industry, are shown in Cioca et al. (2015), for 2005–2011. To
our best knowledge, this is the first study that evaluates
the solid waste management system that applies the carbon
footprint methodology based on aggregated models to obtain
information on the greenhouse gases emissions associated to
the solid waste generation and treatment
