Serbia have moved to the top of Group D, and it's largely thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic. The fiery Newcastle United striker hit a first-half brace to set his country on its way. Having missed the first four games of the season through suspension and without a start for Newcastle since mid-September, he'll have been delighted to have found a congratulatory text message from Rafa Benitez waiting for him. Now, perhaps he might kick on and finally fulfill his potential at St James Park.
When you're up against a team of determined minnows, the last thing you want to do is offer them any hope. The longer you go without scoring, the more confident they get and the more likely it is something horrible will happen. Hats off to Christian Benteke, then, for removing all doubts from manager Roberto Martinez's mind in just 8.1 seconds. Benteke went on to complete his hat-trick against Gibraltar in a 6-0 win that must have been Martinez's least stressful day at work in years.
It wasn't a good Tuesday night for England, but if not for Joe Hart, it might have been much, much worse. Dispatched from Manchester City because he wasn't deemed good enough with the ball at his feet, he proved once again that he's still pretty decent with his hands. Twice he came to England's rescue when reckless back passes invited catastrophe, but his best moment came early in the second half, with a stunning double save.
