8.1.11 Complexity of objectives A number of possible objectives for organizations have been suggested above. In practice, a organization is likely to be pursuing multiple objectives at any one time. Furthermore, object ives are likely to change through time. Trying to identify the objectives that are influencing the behaviour of an organization can present a number of practical problems The first place to look for a statement of an organization's objectives might be its Memorandum and Articles of Association. In the UK, this statement is required by the Companies Acts for all limited companies, and includes an objects clause. In practice, com panies frequently draw up their objects clause in a way that is so wide that the company can do almost anything A up-to-date statement of objectives may be found in the annual report and accounts that UK companies must produce annually and submit to Companies House where it is avail able for public inspection. Larger companies must include a directors' report, which may give an indication of the goals that the company is working towards. Many companies publish mission statement, which gives a broad statement of the anticipated future direction that its business will take. We will return to the subject of mission statements in the following chapter.
