Within Mahayana, in the more esoteric sects Amitabha is one of five Buddhas known as the Celestial Buddhas.
The celestial Buddhas are known in both Pure Land Buddhism and also in Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism, the kind of Buddhism that is prevalent in Tibet.
Each of these Buddhas, also known as a Dhyani Buddha (“Meditation Buddha”), presides over a “family” of Buddhist deities.
