Uninvolved parents score low in both the acceptance/responsiveness and the demanding/control dimensions. Often parents who show this style have their own stresses and problems and are so overwhelmed by these that they do not have the time or motivation to devote to child-rearing. Such parents impose few rules and demands but are also unresponsive to their children’s needs and emotionally detached. At its extreme, uninvolved parenting would be regarded as a form of child maltreatment called neglect.
