Due to cultural
beliefs and norms, some individuals may believe
that medical care is reserved for the treatment
of chronic symptomatic illnesses, not for disease
prevention. This theme is categorized as existential
or negative depending on whether these cultural
beliefs hindered the individual from seeking medical
attention. These Perceptions are exemplified in
responses such as: “When I didn’t fall sick, I see
no reason why I should go to hospital” (unscreened
woman). “It’s an African thing not to always go see
doctors regularly... They only go when the disease
is at a chronic stage when they are about to die”
(screened man).
