In Thailand, the national prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women was 13% [8] but the prevalence in the southern region was as high as 37.8% [9]. In addition, 55% of women had their daily nutrient intake less than the minimum acceptable levels based on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) [10]. Inadequacy of micronutrient intake was also noted in a recent study in southern Thailand [11].
