The 27-year-old Onalaska man missing in the Mississippi has been identified as Joshua Hli Xiong.
The search for Xiong resumed this morning, Winona County Sheriff's Department Lead Deputy Jeff Mueller said. Xiong is presumed to have drowned in the accident.
Xiong was reported missing Sunday morning after did not return from a late night fishing trip. Mueller said Xiong went walleye fishing alone at Lock and Dam No. 7 near Dresbach about 11 p.m. Saturday. Rescue crews began the search about 9:30 a.m. Sunday after finding a life jacket and gas tank near the dam and a boat about one mile downstream. The boat had sustained significant damage.
Authorities believe the accident took place by roller gate No. 1 and that the boat went through the gate. They flushed the gates Sunday but did not find the boater. The search continued until nightfall Sunday.
Winona County Dive Rescue, Winona County deputies, Dakota Fire Rescue, Town of Campbell Fire and Rescue, La Crosse Sheriff Dive Team, La Crescent Fire Rescue, Houston County Sheriff and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Federal Fish and Wildlife responded, along with La Crescent Police and the Red Cross.
