The mothers were empowered when they were full
participants in their child's care — in working towards
mutually agreed upon goals for their child with health care
professionals — and when they were heard The mothers
did not want to dictate to health care professionals what
should be done for the child They also did not want the
physicians to agree with their requests or suggestions without
some confirmatory dialogue What these mothers
needed most in order to be empowered was to be heard
by the health care professionals
