Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (SFAs
and MUFAs, respectively) are among the most
prominent stored lipid components in eukaryotic
algae and generally reach values greater than 80%
of the total lipid fraction (Richmond, 2004). Some
marine microalgae species contain high levels of
long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs)
in their lipid fractions, such as eicosapentaenoic
(EPA - 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA
– 22:6n-3)
