Many years ago the Zytglogge Clock Tower stopped working and for 122 years stood idle. Then a repairman designed a new mechanism. The year was 1530, and the clock has kept time for Bern residents ever since. Located in Old Town, the clock comes to life four minutes before each hour when mechanical jesters, bears and roosters parade in a circle. Then the Zytglogge, translated as “time bell” from Swiss Bernese German, chimes as the hammer strikes the bell.
