Following Berry’s classical model for a vibrating
surface (1958), Nahir (1978) proposed that a fruit can be
described as a dynamic system composed of a mass and a
spring (fig. 3). Such a system has a defined natural
frequency. When the system is forced to vibrate at a
frequency lower than the natural frequency, the mass will
move in-phase with the forcing movement. When forced to
move at a frequency higher than the natural frequency, the
mass movement will be out-of-phase with the forcing
movement (fig. 4). Thus, we may assume that when a body
handled on a vibrating surface is forced to move at a
frequency (ω) lower than its natural frequency (ω0), it will
move in a direction opposite to that of a body forced to
move at a frequency higher than its natural frequency.
Experiments with two bodies (1 and 2, respectively) having
different resonant angular frequency (ω01 < ω > ω02), have
shown that when the two bodies are placed on a vibrating
surface with a frequency of ω, they moved in opposite
directions to each other (Nahir, 1978).
