question and answer within the text. For example, the
task during the first step is to garner an overall meaning
of the text. This researcher read the entire interview
text of all nine participants to identify expressions that re-
flected the fundamental meaning of autonomy. The next
step involves detailed analysis of each sentence to discover
the themes that expose the linguistic meaning of
the sentence. In this study, the themes identified were
validated by using participant quotations and specific evidence
in the text. At this stage an extensive table of
recurring phrases and words was developed. Themes identified
became a product of both the researcher’s preunderstanding
and the participant’s understanding of the
