G.S. Dunn’s products are milled from 100% Pure Yellow, Brown and Oriental mustard seeds. During the course of the milling process nothing is added nor removed from the mustard seeds. All of this Company’s products are gluten free and do not contain any other known allergens except for natural “sulphites”.Mustard seed belongs to the Brassica family and contains naturally occurring “sulphites” at a level of <20 ppm.As with all agricultural products there may be a trace of gluten from adventitious or technically unavoidable sources. Gluten tests were completed on our mustard and concluded that gluten is <20 ppm. We have a solid HACCP program that includes signed affidavit by trucking companies that transport our commodities between locations. This includes verification of sanitation and previous load haul information. The US Food and Drug Administrations, Final Rule publication on Food Labeling; Declaration of Sulphiting Agents, in the Federal Register/Vol. 51, No. 131/July 9, 1986, commented that certain foods such as Alliums and Brassica vegetables contain naturally occurring sulfur dioxide yielding compounds and stated “FDA will take the existence of natural levels of sulfites into account in determining whether a shipment of food complies with the labeling requirement of this regulation. The Agency has no reason to believe that these naturally occurring sulfur dioxide yielding compounds would have adverse reactions in sulfite-sensitive individuals. These foods have been consumed safely. There is no record of sulfite-type adverse reactions to Allium and Brassica vegetables that do not contain added sulfating agent”.Mustard seed and mustard is considered as a priority allergen in Canada and the EU and has regulatory labelling requirements as such. Currently the United States does not consider this as an allergen and does not regulate use levels or labelling requirements.
