Responsibilities
Providing animal care and husbandry services, including but not limited to: feeding/watering animals; handling and restraint of animals; cage & bedding changing; cleaning/sanitizing animal rooms, hallways, ancillary equipment; monitoring environmental parameters as required; assessing the presence of vermin and effectiveness of control efforts; performing animal health observations; assisting in the local delivery/transport of animals; assisting in the inspection and storage of feed and bedding materials; performing minor equipment and facility maintenance (e.g., cleaning air ducts/grills).
Assuring that procedures and practices involving the program of animal care are appropriate for continued AAALAC accreditation of the NIA-IRP facilities.
Adherence to security procedures and confidentiality requirements.
Ensuring adherence of contract personnel to established NIA-IRP SOPs.
Participating in the ongoing employee training program, with special emphasis on safety and health training, safe work practices, and use of personal protective equipment.
Performing job tasks/duties in compliance with NIH/NIA policies, regulations, safety, and security procedures.
Performing work in compliance with applicable safety requirements.
Adherence to equipment sanitation schedules.
Assuring that records, log books, and other project records are appropriately maintained.
Other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: HS diploma or GED equivalency required.
Experience: 1 year related technical experience in animal care with at least 6 months of that time working with laboratory animal species preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level required or must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
