Introduction.Obtainingbloodpressuresinpediatricemergencydepartmentpatientsisthestandardofcare;however,thereislittle
evidencetosupportitsutility.ThisprospectivestudyassessesthebenefitofBPacquisitioninpatients ≤5years. Methods.Data
werecollectedbytheEDtriagenurseson649patientsintwocommunityhospitalEDs.Relationshipsbetweenabnormalblood
pressuresandthepatients’age,acuity,andcalmversusnot-calmemotionalstatewereanalyzed. Results.Thereweresignificant
differencesintherateofelevatedBPsinthecalmandnot-calmgroupsofpatients.Overall,one-andtwo-year-oldpatientswere
morelikelytohaveelevatedBPsthanthoseinotheragegroups.Veryfewpatientsinthesamplehadhypotension(1%).Therewas
norelationshipbetweenEmergencySeverityIndex(ESI)acuitylevelandanabnormalBP.Nineteenpercentofcalmpatientshad
elevatedBPs,with3.6%ofpatientsinthestagetwoclassofhypertension. Conclusions.ThereislimitedbenefitinobtainingBPsin
childrenageoffiveorlessregardlessofwhetherthechildiscalmornotinESIacuitylevels3and4.
