In Germany, dried digestate has recently been tested in co-firing with coal or wood chips. If successful, the outcome could be particularly useful for secondary utilization of the digestate from MSW and food industry residues which are currently not recommended for land spreading. The International Biogas & Bioenergy Centre of Expertise (Thoss, 2008) and the Central Network for Agriculture-Resources-Marketing and Development (Arndt and Wagner, 2009), recorded suboptimal co-firing characteristics, therefore the technical and economic feasibility are still unclear and will require further research.
