An early version of the Ion Sense interface is shown in Fig. 25. JEOL manufacture a DART source equipped with anautoslider that can scan thin-layer plates cut into strips with a width of about 1 cm [110]. The resolution of scanned separations is limited by the cone diameter of the source beam and sensitivity by surface sampling. Sample detectability depends on manysource and mass spectrometer parameters and typically requires sample amounts in the low microgram to high nanogram range.Lower sample detectability was achieved using matrix-assisted sampling by applying a solvent matrix (glycerol) to the layer prior to measurement or by cutting the layer through the sample zone and exposing the edge of the layer to the source beam (manual methods) [108,111]. Quantification is improved by using stable-isotope-dilution analysis [108,110].
