In this study, we proposed a BB system adapted to the assignment and scheduling
of maintenance mechanics at a manufacturing facility. Since this is the first exploration
of using BB system in maintenance, our research attempts to validate the experimental
results through simulation of and implementation at the industrial partner’s
environment. Practically, the continuous self-regulating nature of the BB system
should provide an inherent means to keep the maintenance workforce at just the
necessary size that will guarantee the required availability of machines. The proposed
system also has the potential for increasing the utilisation of corrective maintenance
workforce since the mechanics, like the operators that are found to be contributing
minimally in the serial assembly line, could be reassigned or eliminated. Our study also
investigates the financial consequences of some remedial measures recommended to the
company.
