In this facility, CHEMEX pretreatment with sodium hydroxide was applied to improve the enzymatic digestibility. After pretreatment, the solid and glucose recovery levels were 38.6% and 74.1%, respectively. Pretreated EFB were hydrolyzed and fermented with 40 FPU/g cellulose and 5% S. cerevisiae through the SHF, resulting in an 83.6% ethanol conversion rate. In order to purify the ethanol, distillation and dehydration facilities were operated. Distillation and dehydration efficiencies were 98.9% and 99.2%, respectively. The material balance was calculated using the results obtained from the operation of the pilot-scale bioethanol plant. In the pilot-scale plant, 144.4 kg of anhydrous ethanol (99.7 wt%) could be produced from 1000 kg dry weight of EFB. This result constitutes a significant contribution to the feasibility of bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass and justifies the scale-up to a commercial-scale plant.
