Before this opening class, my students have not used any of the vocabulary from this unit, but they have likely been introduced to the basic geometric solids in their middle school mathematics classes. They are able to recognize a prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone, and sphere if they are presented with an actual model or drawing of these shapes. They have not learned to give specific names to solids they have not been exposed to irregular solids (e.g., frustums, truncated cylinders, ellipsoids).
