The personal meaning of pain was
not given thorough consideration in the studies reviewed
although examples of pain and meaning were evident. These
included Adamson et al. (2004), Green (1996), Holland et al.
(1997), and Magarey and McCutcheon (2005) who described
how patients in pain, who were also delirious and did not
know that they were critically ill, struggled to understand
why they had pain and what it meant.
