The present study is valuable as it is the first study to evaluate
body composition, obesity, and sarcopenia by using objective
methods, including DXA in leprosy survivors, and to compare
these with those of the general population. The leprosy survivor
group had higher mean body weight and BMI than the control
group. They also had more fat mass and a higher percentage of fat
in the whole body and in every individual body part. The leprosy
survivor group also had lower ASM and SMI values, and a higher
rate of sarcopenia. However, a reduction of regional lean mass was
apparent only in the legs.
