Originally the human being is "a wild beast, a cousin of the gorilla" but the historical process changes this bestial nature (1960:80). The process of evolutionary change, Bukunin argues, involves a period of being in slavery to God , when we come to believe that God is the cause ,center , and source of life ; however , we develop beyond this phase. The process is not easy , as Bukunin notes: The "historical negation of the past takes place now slowly, sluggishly , sleepily , but now again passionately and violently"(1960:80). Besides illustrating a significant Hegelian influence , this argument focuses attention on the idea that humanity does indeed develop , progress , and move forward.
