systems typically have small root systems (Diaz-Espejo et al., 2012)
and therefore may be more susceptible to water stress in SHD than
traditional plantings. Finally, an important goal in SHD orchards
is to reduce vegetative growth to allow over-the-row harvesting
with minimal pruning; this is not an issue in traditionally-spaced
orchards. Lower production costs with mechanical harvesting and
pruning, fertigation, and improved pest and disease management
have spurred growth in SHD olive orchards. Today, more than
100,000 ha are planted with this system worldwide (Agromillora
Catalana, 2007).
