Under the AIUV scheme, Nestlé put up a production plant with regional capacities in each of five ASEAN countries Indonesia, Malaysia Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. The idea was for each of them to become a production center for a particular product to be distributed within ASEAN and other Asian countries. Brunei, the sixth member of ASEAN, was an equity participant in the project And so, Indonesia was tapped to produce soya-based beverages; Malaysia bouillon, chocolate wafers, and chocolate dragees; Singapore soya sauce powder: Thailand non-dairy creamer; and Philippines breakfast cereals. The products were selected so that the benefits would accrue not only to ASEAN as a whole but to each member country. The location of each of the plants, on the other hand, was determined according to demand patterns based on market knowledge.
